Capt Jack won the toss for BCC and batted first - great decision considering you could cook eggs on the wicket!
As we continue to rotate players in different batting positions and bowling, it was Jamie and Jack who opened up. It was a hot day for running quick singles, and Jamie was sporting a particularly nasty looking cut on his knee, but none of this stopped Capt Jack from calling aggressively for singles and putting pressure on the fielders. The boundaries were hard to come by and with 15 on the board after 5 overs they took it to the next level. Unfortunately this level was Jamie calling the ever popular "NO - YES - NO - SORRY" and Jack was left stranded and run out. Next in was Aryan, putting to good use his dab shot to balls outside off stump, Jamie and Aryan put on another 10 or so before both of them were bowled. This brought Freddie and Monty together, our U10 pairing. They went about the bowling really well, Monty chancing his luck on occasions with a lot of balls into the air, but the score rattled along through to the 15th over. At this point I retired them to give others a go, we were already in the heady heights of a score over 80 which we have never done before! Freddie retired on 27 no and Monty on 29 no. Very impressive from both of them. In came Joe and Ben, with clear instructions from me to be aggressive, plenty of wickets left and 5 overs. They both gave it a go, Ben getting caught from a full toss that in hindsight was probably a no ball but c'est la vie! David and Mohit finished off the innings and we ended up on 102 after our 20 overs - a new record!
After some much needed drinks and biccies (thanks Zoe) we were into the field (bit cooler now) and it was a quick fire start. Mohit took 2 wickets in his first over and another in his second, Ben took one in his second and CSG top order had been knocked over - they were 5-4
They did really well to come back from this, as we ringed the changes on the bowling (everyone got a bowl except Aryan who kept again and did really well). I thought David bowled much better and was unlucky not to take a wicket (in fact both David and Alfie would have had extremely good reason to review the 2 LBW decisions I turned down!). It came down to Capt Jack to take the last wicket.
Thoroughly enjoyable match, played in best of spirits by both teams. CSG showed great team spirit fielding in the hot sun but the difference really came down to us getting a few more runs on the board than normal and having such a fast start with the ball. Another day I imagine it could be the other way round.
For training, I think Monty and Freddie showed the way - we need to score runs, which means we need to hit the ball, then call correctly, then run to the other end - sounds simple but I know it isnt!
Many thanks to everyone, on to the next one...
